HILLTOP SCHEDULES MOTORCYCLE AND QUAD RACING AND CONSIDERS ADDITIONAL STOCK CAR EVENTS

On the heels of reopening to capacity crowds for a spectacular sprint car show by the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions, Hilltop Speedway promoters are working to schedule additional motorsports events yet in 2008.

The one-third mile high banked dirt oval south of Millersburg, Ohio was at first closed temporarily on July 29th and then on August 7th it was announced Hilltop would be closed for the rest of the season. A rapid reorganization of track ownership and promotions transpired over the span of two weeks, prompting Hilltop to forge boldly ahead, and reopen.

The decision to reopen in 2008 under new management was made on August 21st, giving Hilltop a mere nine days to rehabilitate and prepare for an All Star sprint race that brought in top notch open wheel drivers from all across the continent. With the help of countless volunteers, an excited community and dedicated track staff, Hilltop’s efforts paid off when thousands flocked to the dirt track and were treated to a thrilling show on a much improved racing surface. Fans were on their feet to see Los Angeles, California’s Tyler Walker make a last lap pass for the feature win in a car owned by NASCAR’s Kasey Kahne.

With Sunday’s show in the books, interim Hilltop promoters Adam Campbell and Bob Sigler immediately began looking at upcoming dates that remain open for additional race events yet this season. A multitude of factors must be carefully considered in the scheduling process, but any possible events will prove vital to further development of the facility for 2009 and years to come.

Taking into consideration the previous cancellation of all remaining motorsports at Hilltop, Campbell and Sigler have decided against any additional car racing for points. Since 2006, points were earned in the five regular divisions of Friday night racing, determining respective season champions with awards presented annually in a banquet style format. The 2008 points paying races were originally scheduled to end in late August and the initial cancellation of all racing at Hilltop prompted some loyal “home track” competitors to sell their cars, begin tearing down for the offseason or pursue other racing endeavors altogether. At this time, no 2008 awards banquet has been set, but final points are being tabulated and verified with strong intentions of hosting a banquet to honor the race teams, sponsors and staff that dedicated their time and efforts to Hilltop on a weekly basis.

However, one race date has been made official, as Hilltop will run non-sanctioned flat track racing for motorcycles and quads on Saturday, September 20th, with Sunday, September 21st set as a rain-out date. In review of the previous financial struggles of the facility, Adam Campbell suggested the event to Bob Sigler, who invested much time and effort with former Hilltop promoters to develop a flat track program as a supplement to weekly car racing. Inclement weather permitted just one previous motorcycle race at Hilltop in mid-June and although the event was a learning experience, it was regarded as a success with great potential. Despite the closing of Hilltop, Sigler maintained a strong relationship with other flat track venues and promoters and was able to secure the lone remaining open date on the calendar for such an event.

In addition, Hilltop is looking very closely at Saturday, October 4th and Saturday, October 25th as potential dates for racing a traditional dirt track stock car show, or at least very close to it with minor changes to division rules. Hilltop management is working very hard to make official announcements regarding the remaining season as soon as possible. All information regarding Hilltop Speedway programs and events will be posted on the track website, www.hilltopspeedway.org. The Hilltop track phone also features updated information that can be heard by calling 330-674-6747.
